Today I want to talk, or write, to you about CHEMICAL PEELS! In the world today, the term chemical peel has been explored and talked about by every skin savvy human being out there and is embedded as a routine method to be used monthly as treatment for a wide variety of skin issues/concerns by any skin care professional. It’s likely that you are somewhat familiar with the procedure, and its intended results, even if you never thought about the benefits for your own skin. I want to go into a brief explanation, for all you peel “virgins” out there, to help ease any concerns and educate you on the MANY benefits provided by our FRIEND the PEEL!
I would like to list for you, first, all of the amazing results that come from having a Chemical Peel performed by a skin care professional. Most individuals are aware that TEXTURE is one of the main areas of concern targeted by chemical peels but are not educated on just what that entails. Chemical peels can help smooth and recover leathery skin caused by lack of exfoliation and/or damage done to skin by UVA/UVB rays in the form of photo-damage (sun damage). They can help to reduce the appearance of acne scaring by removing the damage on the outer layers while stimulating a boost in collagen production in epidermal-dermal layers of the skin. Chemical Peels also help to increase the ELASTICITY, or “bounce back” effect, and bring life back into dull, lackluster, skin that just needs a healthy boost. In a nutshell, Peels are used to lighten, brighten, and tighten sun or photo-damaged skin, treat acne and acne scaring, boost healthy cell production and correct texture issues while also minimizing depth, number, and severity of fine lines and deeper set wrinkles. Just about EVERYONE can benefit from one of our many peel options!
Now I’d like to tell you a little bit about COSMEDIX and why OUR Peels are the safest and most effective way to get the results you are looking for. Donna Killian, our National Director of Education, says it best: “All too often, people focus on the end result, but what matters most is how we get there. The path you take to achieve radiant, beautiful skin is vital,”
Most people, including some industry experts, believe that blistering and peeling is a necessary component in the success of a chemical peel. What they don’t necessarily know, is that blistering not only causes injury to the skin, but damages its overall health as well, breaking down living cells and causing severe side effects and longer “down time” as a result. Traditional Chemical Peels wound the skin using strong acids with higher Ph levels. This wounding is believed to force the skin to repair itself by forming new, healthier, skin. While a wound in the epidermis does notify the skin to stimulate new fibroblasts, it is not necessary and is definitely not the best approach to achieving healthy, younger looking, skin. CosMedix’s peels, on the other hand, stimulate healthy cell turnover by communicating to the cells’ receptor sites, not by simply blistering the skin. CosMedix’s line of CHIRALLY CORRECT Chemical Peels encourages the body’s NATURAL response to a Chemical Peel rather than forcing it to become inflamed and irritated. Containing ingredients such as encapsulated retinol, L-lactic acid and blueberry antioxidants, CosMedix’s peels minimize inflammation and optimize the health of the skin.
Donna Killian, offers an easy to understand and logical analogy on this topic: “The subject of wounding versus non-wounding chemical peels is similar to getting into a house. There are two ways you could go about entering, either by breaking in or using a key. While breaking a window would give you the same end result as a key, getting into the house, it would be a much more violent approach and cause a big mess. A key, however, would not only get you inside the house, but it would be the safest way to do so.”
Depending on the condition of your skin, how well you prep, and your natural sensitivities, you may still experience some mild irritation from CosMedix’s peels. Irritation is a natural side effect that occurs any time you are changing Ph levels, introducing new products, or treating deeper into the skin that you have in the past. Be sure that your Skin Care Professional is aware of all products you are currently using and medications you may be taking and make them aware of all topical allergies or sensitivities. Always follow ALL prep-instructions and after care protocol given to you by your Esthetician as well!
